IT IS ALL ABOUT LEARNING
FUNDAMENTALS The Denville Recreation Baseball camp is one of the oldest camps in Morris County. We specialize in pre little league fundamentals for the 5-6 year olds (Basics Class) and little league fundamentals and strategies for players 7 to 12 year old (Regular Camp). In 2007, at the request of parents of campers, a third camp was added, "Welcome to the Big Diamond". This camp is designed for the 12 to 15 year old camper to learn the fundamentals and techniques needed to achieve on the big diamond. All of our camps are "rain or shine" and run five days a week. The campers self esteem is paramount in all of our camps and goes hand and hand with the exceptional group of instructors and individual teaching the campers receive! Our Basics Camp (5-6 year olds) is completely separated from the regular camp by starting times and fields. The class is one and one half hours in duration, five days a week from 8:30 to 10:00 am. Throwing, fielding, base running, hitting and field positions are stressed. Only plastic bats and tennis balls are used in this camp. Helmets are required in all hitting situations, as they are in all of our camps. Several contests during the week are used to enforce fundamentals taught. It is a great start to each player's baseball career and the kids have a great time! The instructor to camper ratio is six to one or less. On the last day of camp we celebrate the week by having a "dugout" baseball party with fruit pops and prizes. Our "Regular" baseball camp is for the 7 to 12 year olds. All campers are grouped by age and ability and the baseballs used are always age appropriate! We use four different types of baseballs ranging from tennis balls and "incrediballs" for the younger camper, rubber coated baseballs for the middle aged groups and the regular hard balls for the older campers. To insure safety for all campers, the first line of business in camp is going over the camp rules. These rules are strictly enforced. The ratio of camper to counselor in this camp is approximately one councilor to nine campers or less. This camp stresses fundamentals at all
times! We reinforce our teaching by constant positive
praise and contests incorporating some fundamental that was taught that day or during
the week. We award new baseballs to players who perform these
fundamentals in contests and the camp games, which are played at the end
of each day. All of the counselors make the presentation of balls,
for their groups, in the bleachers in front of parents and peers.
The camp is ended each week with the awarding of three plagues for most
improved and three plaques for the outstanding campers. The Welcome to the Big Diamond camp is just that: It is a camp that stresses fundamentals on the regulation baseball diamond. It is dedicated to those players who want a head start after leaving little league and those players who want to hone their skills with advanced instruction. The age of the campers is 12 to 15. Because of the larger field of play, many of the fundamental techniques change on the big diamond. Although little league is a foundation for future play, the game of baseball changes dramatically on the big diamond. Each position has a multitude of new responsibilities that will define the ability of each player's future. Learning these new fundamentals and techniques from experienced coaches will greatly enhance each player's skills and knowledge so they can make an impact on future teams they may play for. Any serious minded player should seriously consider attending. The camp will run five days from 9:00 to 12:30. The instructors for all of our camps have impressive credentials!
